To back up Niravah, open Settings, then “Cloud Sync”, tap “Back up my moments” and confirm your email with a 6-digit code. To move to a new phone, sign in with the same email. No account? A backup file does the same job.
Turn on the backup
In Settings, open “Cloud Sync” and tap “Back up my moments”. The screen says “Worth keeping.” Tap “Turn on backup”. You need to be at least 16 to create an account, and Niravah asks for your date of birth in “Just a quick check”.
Give your consent
Read the short note and tap “I consent to encrypted backup”. The optional backup is encrypted before it leaves your phone and hosted in Europe.
Confirm your email
Enter your email under “What’s your email?” and tap “Send my code”. There is no password. Type the 6-digit code from your inbox and tap “Confirm”. When “Your world is backed up.” appears, you are set.
Know what syncs
Your pages and words sync across your devices for free, iPhone, iPad and Android alike. Backing up photos online is part of Premium. In the free version your photos stay on your phone, and the “Cloud Sync” screen says so.
Restore on a new phone
Install Niravah, open Settings, then “Cloud Sync”, and tap “Sign in to restore”. Use the same email and the new 6-digit code. Your pages and words come back, and your photos too if photo backup was on.
If you chose to manage recovery yourself
By default, Niravah keeps the key that opens your backup in secure key management, so we can help you back in through your email if you’re ever locked out. This also means we could technically open your backup, and we never read or use your pages. On a phone with a screen lock, you can instead open “Advanced” in “Cloud Sync” and choose “Manage recovery myself” under “Recovery mode”, a choice that can’t be undone. Your backup then comes back only with your recovery kit, or through your phone’s secure keychain on the same Apple or Google account, so a new phone asks for the kit unless it can use that keychain. If you lose both, even we can’t bring it back.
No account? Use a backup file
Open Settings, then “Your Data”, and “Download my data”. Under “A backup file”, tap “Create a backup file”, note your passphrase, confirm “I’ve saved my passphrase somewhere safe” and tap “Create my file”. On the new phone, open “Your Data”, choose “Bring in a backup file”, tap “Choose a file” and enter the passphrase. We never receive the file or the passphrase, so if the passphrase is lost, no one, including us, can open it. Bringing in a file only works while Niravah is still empty on the new phone, so do it right after installing.
Download my data
Also in “Your Data”, “Download my data” gathers everything on your phone, photos included, into one .zip file with “Prepare my data”. It is made on your phone, never sent to us, and not sealed with a passphrase, so keep it somewhere you trust.
Good to know
Without a backup or a file, a lost phone means a lost notebook. Export is free, and so is the sync of your pages and words. Read more answers in the FAQ, or get Niravah to start your notebook.
